Braydon's story

by Challamar Phelps

Date: Fri, 10 Mar 2000 14:48:36 CST

Hi my name is Challamar Phelps and our son Braydon past away due to SIDS on October 17, 1998. We had put him to bed at around 3:30 a.m. after his middle of the night feeding, I thought something was wrong with him that night because he was really cranky and he didn't want to eat or go to sleep which was very unlike him he was always a very good baby, but he did calm down after about an hour and a half of doing this he went to sleep, and so I laid him down next to me for him to go to sleep and the next morning the alarm went off at 10:00 a.m. and my husband Rob had told our daughter good morning and then turned over to Braydon to give him a kiss and tell him good morning just has he did every morning and he realized that something wasn't right about him so he picked him up and turned him over and he was blue, Rob then screamed and I woke up and asked him what was wrong and all he could say was look and he was looking down, so I did and I immediately seen Braydon's face and I picked him up and told Rob to grab Mykhelah that we had to go, and we didn't have a phone so I took off running out the front door to the next door neighbor's house and had them call 911 and the neighbor (Eric) started performing CPR on him because Rob and I both know it but neither one of us could think of what to do at that time and then the ambulance and the fire truck arrived and they started working on him inside the house while we were kept outside so they could work on him and do what they needed to do, and then they came out of the house with our Braydon and put him in the ambulance and we were told to get in a female officers car to be taken to the hospital so we then went there and on the way to the hospital I had myself believing that he would be fine and that he was going to be coming back home with us, (when in all actuality I knew that that wasn't true, because he was cold and blue when I held him) but that was all that I had to hold on to. My father-in-law then arrived, and we were taken to a small room so we could be with family, and then my mom and step-father arrived and right after that the doctor came in and said that there was nothing more that they could do they had done all they could, and I just started screaming and saying no my baby can't go he needs to be here with us, and I couldn't hardly stand up, so my mom sat down and held me for awhile and then we went in to see him and there were tubes connected to him and a blanket wrapped around him and there was blood underneath his nose, so I asked the nurse to please clean his face so I could see my baby, and she did and I sat and rocked him for awhile the nurse then came back in and told me that the medical examiner would soon be there to take Braydon to the medical examiner's office in Tulsa, so they would need to get him ready to go, so I then kissed my baby goodbye and told him that I would see him tomorrow when they brought him to the funeral home.

After that we then were taken back to the house by my mom and step-father and we gathered some clothes and things we would need for the next few days, and I started to look around and see if I could find something for Braydon to wear for the funeral and I opened up a sack that had an outfit that my Grandma Donna had bought for him but he hadn't gotten to wear it yet because it was to big, but when I seen it I thought it would be perfect, It was a blue and tan teddy bear outfit made out of the thick fleece type material and it had a hat with ears on it like a teddy bear. When I told my grandma that he would be wearing that outfit she started crying saying that she thought it was perfect also and it meant a lot to her that I was going to put that outfit on him. The next few days are somewhat of a blur and the only thing that really stands out was having our pictures taken with Braydon at the funeral home, because we hadn't had our pictures made together, and didn't have but a couple of pictures of him close to the time that he passed away. (To some this may not be something that they like but it was a help for us and it could be for others)
