Forest Fire Smoke and SIDS

September 17, 2003

I am a student in Montana. I have recently been working on a paper for my school newspaper about all of the smoke from the forest fires in our area. During which I ran across a study that said that one of the health concerns from the smoke is SIDS. I also know that there was at least one baby that died from SIDS this summer during the worst part of the smoke. I am interested in finding out how I would get information on how many babies in my area died from SIDS this summer and whether it is an increase from last year or not.

I am not aware of any relationship between remote "exposure" to forest fire
smoke and SIDS. Smoke inhalation (carbon monoxide poisoning), of course, can
be an explained cause of sudden, unexpected death in house fires. I hope this
is helpful.
