Circumcision and SIDSDate: Thu, 5 Mar 1998 Can you tell me if there is any causal relationship between infant circumcision and SIDS? I don't know if this has ever been studied formally, and defer to the true specialists. However, in all the medical literature I've read about SIDS (which is a lot), I have seen no correlation to circumcision. The fact is that while circumcision is certainly a surgical procedure, it is so commonly done on male infants in this country that I would think a relationship would have become obvious by now, and that we would see a much higher SIDS rate among male infants compared to female which is not the case. When done by an experienced physician circumcision takes just a few moments, and I personally have never seen an infant with any ill effects afterward although I know complications have been reported as with any other surgery. From the personal viewpoint, my daughter died of SIDS and my subsequent son, now full of mischief and energy at 9 years old, was circumcised as a newborn. Hope this is of some help-- |
